Why, when I change the sheets on my bed, am I forever putting the clean ones on after 11:30 at night?

Even when I removed the old sheets at 4 in the afternoon.

Or 7 in the morning.

Even when I’ve done the laundry– washer and dryer– and could just as easily put the same ones (now Clean) back on.

Even when I’ve had– all along– clean ones ready and waiting in the linen closet.

But it’s always the Same Thing: dragging myself to bed bleary-eyed, so ready to lie horizontal and still for a few hours together, and the dawning, ugly, dreadful realization somewhere between the upstairs and down, that I Don’t Have Any Sheets On My Bed.

Trust me — you are not alone. My bed is bare (thanks to a sick doggy) and I’m planning to sleep on the couch when I get home from DMB tonight. I’m not even going to pretend I might fix it today.

Maybe it is that we subconsiously hope that if we wait until after dark, if we wait until the work is done and there is only one thing our weary minds can do, sleep, maybe Someone will come along and pull the other side up and over the corner of the mattress and help lift and tuck those long dangly sides of sheet and blanket, and maybe there will be Someone who will fluff at least one of the pillows so it doesn’t seem like ONE MORE THING.Been there…RD
