Everett had five new words yesterday. Five.
“Listing.” He was pushing the cart for me on our way out of Wal-Mart. “Mom, the cart keeps going over this way,” he said.
“That’s called listing,” I told him, and told him what it meant, and told him how it’s different from when you are, say, listing your favorite foods.
“Loathe.” We came across this one as he was reading aloud to me– more of Harry Potter. He couldn’t pronounce it, and when I said it for him, he asked me what it meant.
And in the car, on the way home from choir practice, he asked me the meaning of three words in rapid succession: “legend,” “runner-up,” and “rookie.” All of these are words featured for a moment in the movie Cars, and he wanted to know.
Five words in one day. Not bad.
So later I asked him for a quick review, just wondering, really, how well he’d gotten them all down. And he told me, without a pause, the definition of every one.
Not Bad At All.
