One of the rich pleasures of parenting– and if you are missing out on this particular pleasure then Shame On You– is getting to read and re-read all those books you love and introduce them to your children. It has been my pleasure to read– several times– Charlotte’s Web to my children. We are making our way through Lewis’ Narnia, and it never fails to delight me. And, of course, there is always the Little Bear series, written especially for the young reader. It is, somehow, the book I always reach for when the children want to be read to and there is nothing particular at hand. And I’m not a young reader. No.
This morning my Everett made his way through all 62 pages of Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham. And then, right there in the waiting room of the dentist’s office, I read it aloud again because Emma Grace wanted it again and because, honestly, old readers can read Differently than young.
Is there any writer anywhere in earth’s history able to make reading more fun than Seuss? Is there any writer anywhere who makes one more Glad that one hasn’t really grown up? Not yet, anyway? Not entirely?
Ah, Dr. Seuss. Your gifts are good, and we are grateful.
