Found New Device

I love my iPod.

Last night, while William was at a birthday party and Bill was not yet home, during that terrible witching hour when the children are generally bored and wanting dinner and I become Absolutely Fed Up, I put a dvd on for the younger two and I put on my iPod. And for the next hour or so, they needed me not and I heeded them not while I danced around the house, putting away laundry, tidying things, making dinner.

This morning I wore it again and listened in isolated bliss as I drove to orchestra rehearsal, and crossed the parking lot, and went into rehearsal. I only turned it off when I absolutely Had To, and put it back on again Immediately Thereafter.

And after lunch and conversation with tworivers (thank you), I put it on yet again while I went shopping at Old Navy. And I did not have to listen to their over-loud and awful music, and I didn’t have to hear the whines of other people’s children, and I did not pay attention to anyone else. I was listening to Sixpence None the Richer, and Pearl Jam, and Van Morrison, and all the things that I like.

The only sadness was that the battery died on my way home, and this was particularly grievous because U2 was just getting into the good part of “City of Blinding Lights,” and, if you know that song, then you know that the good part is really, really good. Yes, I was sad about this, and tried it again after letting the battery rest for, say, thirty seconds, and once again it died just as it was getting to the good part. So I let it rest for forty-three seconds, but the same thing happened again.

So now I’ve brought it home and plugged it into my computer, and am waiting anxiously for it to recharge. I had been sitting here only a few minutes when my computer sent me a little message. A grey rectangle appeared in the middle of the screen and it said: “Found New Device. iPod.”

Isn’t that cute?

So let me get this straight. You like the iPod because it lets you drown out the noise of your children and strangers you don’t want to have to deal with. Nice, a device to streghten our self centered sinful nature. Very Nice.

And let ME get this straight — you listen to your iPod while you’re driving? Oh wait – you have one of those CD adapter thingies, don’t you. I was about to scold you if you had earphones in your ears while driving. And I could hear it when you were 10 feet away from me. Are you not worried about your hearing?? What’s that you say??

What? WHAT??? What was that you said????Yes, you are right, tworivers, sometimes I listen to my iPod too loudly (my iPod. MY iPod.). The other evening I was sitting at the desk and Bill was sitting in the living room, and he could hear the song I was listening to on my iPod (MY iPOD). It was too loud. But it was a really great song, and I was actually, at the time, marvelling at stereo sound and how the sound seemed to be in the very center of my head, and I wasn’t thinking about long-term hearing loss. Then I turned it down. And yesterday, in your front yard, I was listening too loudly again. It was another good song. But I must have turned it up when I parked the car, because I was driving the zippy car yesterday, and we don’t have the c.d. adapter thingy in that car. So, yes, I was listening to my iPod (M. i.) while driving. But– and this is really, really true– I very deliberately kept the volume quite low while I was driving (low even by your standards, I mean)because no iPod or great song is worth Harm to myself or others.I may be a twit, and uncool, but I’m not THAT much of a twit.

Hey Rebecca, the Essers were here Sunday and Peter, of course, has an Ipod! He uses his in the car, hooked to a charger and fed to the car stereo. Any how, he gave me his ‘old’ Bose noise cancelling headphones which work just great!Maybe I’ll get an Ipod (when he decides to get a new one!!)
