The Pen

I am tired tonight. Too tired to write anything here, despite the fact that I have a list of postings just waiting to be written. But I have spent the majority of the last two days remodeling the boys’ bedroom, and that task, though only half-finished, has exhausted me.

I have tried several postings already. I’ve tried writing about Pat Robertson and his suggestion that we pick off President Chavez. Be glad, oh Beth and Lynne, that I am not writing about it, as you have already heard my rant on that subject. But I will just say that, Bonhoeffer notwithstanding, it is generally not a good idea for Christians to declare that it’s okay to murder anyone. Not Anyone. Ever.

I have tried writing about William’s birthday– dear William, sweet William, who had the unbridled audacity to turn nine on Monday. Nine. NINE. I can’t do it. There is too much to say, and I am Too Tired Now.

But I wanted to write something, just because. And so I will tell you that the Absolute Best Pen in the world– the only one I Ever like to use– is the Pilot Precise Rolling Ball pen with the Extra Fine tip. I absolutely love this pen, and like to have several handy At All Times. I keep one in my calendar, one in my journal, one in this nifty little pen slot in my purse. I also like to have one loose in my purse, because You Never Know. I have several in my desk, just Waiting. And the other night, at Elmo’s, the waiter brought Bill one to sign our check with. I Very Nearly stole it. But I think it’s not okay for Christians to steal, either.

Really, it’s not okay for Anyone to murder or steal, but Christians ought to know better.

And I only buy this pen in Extra Fine. I haven’t tried it any other way, because this is an expensive pen (as pens in mult-packs in Wal-Mart go), and I won’t waste my money on a Fine tip or even a Medium tip and risk dissatisfaction. And I am confident that the Extra Fine tip will give me the friction I need, something I cannot be certain the Fine or Medium could do. There has to be friction when you write, or else the writing won’t be any good.

You doubt me? Have you every read anything without friction? No good, right? I rest my case.

It is this very frictionlessness that is the trouble with most non-fiction, but that’s for another posting, one of those postings I mentioned earlier, that is waiting to be written.

But right now my bed also is waiting, and so I will go to it, and hope to write more tomorrow.

You have been loyal to “the pen” for as long as I’ve known you. Thank goodness the pen company still produces it…unlike a good pair of shoes that is never reproduced for more than one season.

Yikes. I’ve never conceived of them Not making my pen. I should buy stock, or something….
