I went for a walk just before eight a.m. yesterday morning, and when I returned an hour later, my house was still asleep.

Aha, I thought to myself, now is the Perfect Time to get some e-mail taken care of.

I haven’t taken care of e-mail in awhile. I haven’t, in fact, been on the computer in a while.

Perhaps you’ve noticed this?

We gave William a new computer game for his birthday. Yes, his birthday isn’t until this Wednesday, but we gave it to him early. And the reasons for this are for another post. The point of my saying it here is that we gave William a Computer Game. For use on the Computer.

Consequence: I haven’t seen much of my computer lately.

So, with the house still sleeping, I thought I’d seize the opportunity to send two pressing e-mails regarding the upcoming semester. No big thing. It wouldn’t take me Any Time At All.

I’m sure you know where I’m going with this. I’m sure that, at some point or other, you have had this same thing happen to you. And for you, O Reader, O Faithful and Recently Disappointed Checker of this blog, I will cut to the chase: I sat down at my computer just before nine a.m., and I didn’t finish my work there until After Noon.

Honest.

But here’s what I accomplished: I communicated regarding and then made plans for my children for teacher work days next week (this involved More Than One phone call); I proposed potential times for meetings with my professor for the development of my thesis over the coming semester (and this involved a phone call to the headmaster of my school); I communicated with my professor regarding what time would be best for our final thesis meeting on December 5th; I determined and scheduled open practice times for William for the upcoming soccer season; I determined and scheduled try-out times for William for the Trinity soccer team; I found out and wrote down the date and time of the mandatory children’s choir meeting; I communicated with our small group on whether or not we should switch our meeting night; I responded to several friendly e-mails that I have neglected for the past month or so; I scheduled a birthday party for William and reserved the gazebo at the pool for this purpose; I wrote to a friend about hosting a jewelry party for her; I wrote to another friend about planning meals for yet another friend; I wrote down the date of the first orchestra rehearsal for the church orchestra.

I sent one of the two pressing e-mails I needed to send regarding the upcoming semester. Which means that one of them has Yet To Be Sent.

But I’m not sending it now. Nope.

That is my daily struggle. Email can take all of time, or none of it all. I’m still trying to find the happy medium. I think that email, like so many things, falls into one of my father’s three rules for life: Clean as You Go.
