What IS it about Jane? I just had the privilege of giving a talk on "The Gospel According to Jane Austen" up here in Boston, and I had SO MUCH MATERIAL (and that without showing any film clips of Colin Firth--or anyone else) that I talked for nearly an hour. When I read her for any length of time, the vocabulary level and intelligence of my speech increases at least five fold.</></>One of the things which distinguishes her, I believe, is her exquisite marriage of morality and wit. Even as she is holding up the Good for our approval and the Unprincipled for our censure, she's casting well-placed witticisms abroad and offering slicing observations. One never feels one is being preached at, but the pill in the jam is taken just the same. (How do you like that mix of metaphors?)

Addendum: I remember that my Most Favorite Professor did indeed mention Ms. Austen More Than Once during my course of study with him at Duke. I said that no one mentioned her, but that was because I forgot about the Several Favorable Mentions she received by the Brilliant One.</></>And yes, if I could, I *would* keep Colin Firth, but I doubt he would dress the way he does in the movie, and my current domestic situation would make his *keeping* here a bit awkward.... I'll stick to his smoldering via the television screen, thank you very much.

Ah, but the new and extremely-improved Jane more than makes up for it... Jane is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the county, but the miniseries version looks like a horse (apologies for being blunt). Rosamund Pike much more clearly fits the bill ... but then again, I'm a guy. You can have Colin Firth, I'll take Rosamund and Keira any day.</></>Mr. Darcy

welcome to the wonderful world...</>also, I don't know how the makers of the new film apparently could not see that Keira Knightley's real hair was sticking out from under her wig in the back. that is my #1 beef with the film. that and donald sutherland has a very bad british accent.</>oh, and mr darcy is played by someone other than colin firth.

The A&E version of Pride & Prejudice is almost unwatchable after you've seen the new updated version with Keira Knightley as Elizabeth. I've discussed this with others, and some still prefer the "old" version, but to me there's no contest. The new version is so much more alive...</></>And the book is good too - Austen's best.</></>-- Mr. Darcy
